About our school

At Arreton St George's Primary school we pride ourselves on our warm friendly family environment where all children feel valued, safe and secure. Our curriculum reflects our belief that learning is fun and accessible to all. We have worked hard to establish a curriculum that is broad, balanced and allows children to make progress with their skills and knowledge in all areas.

We are committed and passionate about delivering an education that is inspiring, fun, thought provoking, relevant and accessible to all our children. Our school values of Love, Hope and Courage form an integral part of our ethos and underpin our pledge to develop the whole child and equip them with the life skills they need.

It is a privilege to be part of every child's education, our Christian ethos, vision and values ensure that together we can help our children grow up to be caring, unique individuals, spiritually, emotionally and academically. Who are School Governors?

School governors are unpaid volunteers who hold headteachers to account and ensure that schools are meeting their strategic objectives.

What are their key responsibilities?

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
• Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff
• Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

How are they chosen?

There are various categories of Governors:

• Foundation Governors in Church of England schools are nominated by the local Parish (Parochial Church Council) and approved by the Diocese. In Voluntary Aided schools, like ours, there must be a majority of Foundation Governors over all other categories combined
• Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Board for their individual skills and experience
• Parent Governors are elected by parents
• Staff Governors are elected by staff
• Local Authority Governors are appointed by the Local Authority
• Headteachers are governors by right (ex officio) for as long as they are in post unless they choose to opt out

Associate Members are appointed to one or more committees of the board because they have specific knowledge and expertise in a particular area. Associate Members are not Governors.

Through Collective Worship, hearing Bible stories, by example and behaviour, our children learn that our core values give richness and purpose to their own lives, and are the basis of our school as a Christian community.

The ethos of our school is best summed up by one of our pupils who said; "We are all different and that's fine, we all get along and accept people for who they are."
